Il-type aircraft have made a significant contribution to the exploration of the Arctic and the Antarctic sky. Our aircraft have been performing air transportation at high latitudes and delivering emergency help since 1948.

The Polar Explorer’s Day is a national holiday we have been celebrating on May 21 since 2013. This day is marked by the first aircraft landing in the proximity of the North Pole. On this day, 80 years ago, in 1937, an outstanding polar pilot Mikhail Vodopyanov, the Hero of the Soviet Union, delivered to the Arctic the first world polar research drifting station – «North Pole-1». The expedition crew consisted of Ivan Papanin, Evgeny Fedorov, Ernst Krenkel, and Petr Shirshov.

At present Russian polar explorers took over the works, started by the polar pioneers, no doubt, with the help of Il aircraft which have been successfully operated in Arctic and Antarctic conditions for more than 70 years.
