IL-76MD-M passed 10 flight tests
Production flight tests of IL-76MD-M first modernized heavy military-transport aircraft are successfully ongoing. At present refinement procedures for newly installed aircraft systems and equipment are in progress to have the aircraft to pass the official tests.
The aircraft in review has already passed 10 flight tests according to aircraft test plan. The tenth flight duration was 7 hours 19 minutes during which all the systems worked in the designed mode. The aircraft was operated in cooperation by OJSC «IL» and Chkalov State Flight Test Centre of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation mutual aircrew with honored test pilot and Hero of the Russian Federation Nikolay Kuimov (OJSC Ilyushin Aviation Complex) as a pilot-in-command and test pilot of Chkalov State Flight Test Centre of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation – Evgeny Shkunov.
IL-76MD-M – is a modernization project designed by OJSC «IL» for aircraft of IL-76MD type and as per performance characteristics approved by RAF developed to modernize the existing IL-76MD heavy military-transport aircraft fleet in service, as well as IL-78 and IL-78M air-refueling aircraft.
According to modernization project the aircraft was equipped with the new navigation system; aircraft lighting facilities, as well as aerial delivery equipment, furnishings, communication and defence systems were also replaced. The aircraft nose was equipped with EO sighting system which ensures operation both within IR and optical range. Within the scope of modernization sometimes interchangeable with IL-76MD-90A advanced military-transport aircraft and IL-78M-90A air-refueling aircraft parts were used. The service life of the aircraft was extended up to 40 years.
OJSC «IL» developed a similar modernization project for IL-78 and IL-78M as well, which will be assigned with new corresponding names – IL-78-2 and IL-78M-2. The first IL-78 air-refueling aircraft has already arrived at Zhukovsky OJSC «IL» production facility to be modernized.
