OJSC «Il» celebrates anniversary of distinguished aircraft designer Genrikh Novozhilov

On October 27, 2015 Genrikh Novozhilov, an outstanding Russian aircraft designer, member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Laureate of the Lenin Prize, two-time Hero of Socialist Labour turned 90. The anniversary celebration took place in the conference hall of OJSC «Il» main building.

Zyuganov, Chairman of the CC CPRF, representatives of the Russian Government, the Ministry of Defence, heads of enterprises and veterans of aircraft industry, OJSC «Il» employees came to congratulate Genrikh Novozhilov.

OJSC «Il» General Director S. Velmozhkin congratulated the hero of the anniversary and read out the order on awarding G. Novozhilov the rank Honorary General Designer of OJSC «Il».

M. Kashtan, member of the board of the Military-Industrial Commission, congratulated G. Novozhilov on behalf of the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev. «An outstanding designer, a legend of the Russian aircraft engineering, you have made a major contribution in the development of the industry, in the improvement of defence capability, you have preserved and enriched the glory of the famous Ilyushin Design Bureau», said Medvedev’s message.

Gennady Zyuganov, Chairman of the CC CPRF, told about collaborative work with Novozhilov and pointed to his character features. «His motto is to fear nothing and to believe in the future, which is possible only for those, who are full of energy every day. As a person he is very appealing on the one hand, but on the other he is extremely exacting, very strict and engaged», said Zyuganov.

Genrikh Novozhilov was also congratulated by representatives of the Ministry of Defense, who, in celebration of his enormous contribution in the defence capability of our country, awarded him the medal «Mikhail Kalashnikov».

In his answering speech G. Novozhilov pointed out, that all planes, that are associated with his name, were built by a team of Ilyushin professionals. «Everywhere and always, even when receiving the highest awards, I’ve always told that behind me there is a team, raised by Sergey Ilyushin. And to be open, my biggest achievement is not the aircraft, but this team that created those planes», said Novozhilov.

The celebration was concluded by film about creative career of the aircraft designer.


Genrikh Novozhilov was born on October 27, 1925 in Moscow.

In 1943 he began working as a laboratory assistant in a department of Moscow Aviation Institute.

1943-1948 – student of MAI.

From 1948 he started working in the fuselage division of Ilyushin Design Bureau. As a design engineer he participated in the creation of the Il-14, Il-40, Il-46 and Il-54. He was the lead engineer during the building and flight tests of the Il-54 bomber.

From 1956 to 1958 he was the party committee secretary of the enterprise.

In 1958 G.V. Novozhilov was appointed Deputy General Designer for the Il-18 aircraft and responsible for aircraft in operation.

He participates in the development of the Il-18 modifications for Air Force – the anti-submarine Il-38, Il-20, Strela and others.

In 1964 by order of the Minister he was appointed II category Chief Designer and First Deputy General Designer. From that time onwards Bureau of Design Definition began to work under the direction of S. V. Ilyushin.

He is in charge for flight testing, production launch and operation of the long-range jet Il-62 aircraft.

In July of 1970 at Sergey Ilyushin’s suggestion, who had retired for health reasons, Novozhilov was appointed General Designer and Head of the enterprise.

It is also important to mention his works on the creation of the Il-76 – the first aircraft, designed by Novozhilov. The prototype of Il-76 took off from the Central Aerodrome in Moscow on March 25, 1971. The aircraft was put into service in 1976.

In 1980 the first Russian wide-body passenger aircraft Il-86 entered air routes of Aeroflot. For this aircraft Novozhilov developed and applied new principles of ensuring flight safety. 130 patented inventions and innovations, high technical culture and scientific research, performed together with TsAGI and introduced by Novozhilov in the Il-86, promoterd further development of the Russian aviation science.

In 1993 general designer Genrikh Novozhilov completed the creation of a new generation aircraft – the long-range wide-body Il-96-300 airliner with Russian ПС-90 engines.

In every aircraft program he participated in Genrikh Novozhilov demonstrated high level of creativity as a scientist and designer by developing simple, reliable and effective aircraft constructions which ensured high flight safety, long life, production and operational maintainability. He made a major contribution in the development of world aircraft industry.

Academician In 1979 he was elected corresponding member, and in 1984 – academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Genrikh Novozhilov was also involved in public work – several times he was a deputy of the Moscow Soviet, the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union, and people’s deputy of the Soviet Union. He is a two-time Hero of Socialist Labour, winner of the Lenin Prize and Government Prize, with the title of «Honoured designer of the Russian Federation», he was awarded three Orders of Lenin, the Badge of Honour, the Order of the Red Banner of Labour, the order of the October Revolution, the order of the Friendship of Peoples, the order «For Merit to the Fatherland» III and II class, the Order of Poland, Czechoslovakia and Uzbekistan, and numerous medals, including the gold medal named after Tupolev for distinguished service in aircraft engineering.

G. V. Novozhilov is a veteran of the Great Patriotic War and veteran of Labour, he was awarded the medals «For Valiant Labour in the Great Patriotic War» and «Veteran of Labour».

From November of 2006 he has been Chief Science Adviser of OJSC «Il» General Director. From October 27, 2015 – honorary General Designer of OJSC «Il».

His working day always begins at 9:00.

In his personal list of scientific research there are 130 patented inventions and innovations, studies of wing aerodynamic configuration, airframe reliability with account for damage safety, high adaptability to manufacture and new maintenance principles.

Contribution of Genrikh Novozhilov – general designer, scientist and manager – in the development of the Russian aviation is widely recognized among Russian and foreign professionals.
