27 October 2014
Новожилов Г.В.October 27, 2014 was marked by the 89th anniversary of Genrikh Novozhilov – General Designer of Ilyushin Design Bureau from 1970 to 2005, member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, two-time Hero of Socialist Labour, at present – Chief Science Adviser of OJSC “Il” General Director.

On October 20, 2014 in World Trade Center in Moscow Genrikh Novozhilov was announced the winner of the top-ranking competition “Aviation worker of the year” as of year-end 2013 “For personal contribution to the development of aviation industry.” When he received the well-deserved award with continuous ovation, Henrikh Vasilyevich thanked the organizers of the contest and expressed his willingness to further serve our country working in the Russian aviation industry.

According to OJSC “Il” Deputy General Director for Engineering Nikolay Talikov, Genrikh Novozhilov is a living legend of Russian aviation industry, who made huge contribution to the creation of “Il” aircraft, that match the best planes in the world in their parameters.

Genrikh Novozhilov was born on October 27, 1925 in Moscow. In 1942 he began working as a laboratory assistant in a department of Moscow Aviation Institute. In 1942 he graduated from the institute. From 1948 he started working in the fuselage division of the design bureau, headed by S.V. Ilyushin. As a design engineer he participated in the creation of the Il-28, Il-40, Il-54 and other aircraft and was the lead engineer during the building and flight tests of the Il-54 bomber. From 1956 to 1958 he was elected the party committee secretary of the enterprise. In 1958 G.V. Novozhilov was appointed Deputy General Designer for the Il-18 aircraft and operation. Starting from 1964 he became Chief Designer and First Deputy of General Designer S.V. Ilyushin. For creation, flight test and production start-up of the Il-62 in 1970 Genrikh Novozhilov was honoured with The Lenin Prize. In June of 1970 at S. Ilyushin’s suggestion, who had retired for health reasons, Novozhilov was appointed General Designer, Accountable Manager of Moscow Engineering Plant “Strela” (former design bureau). From 2006 he has been Chief Science Adviser of OJSC “Il” General Director – General Designer.

From the late 60’s Genrikh Novozhilov took charge of creation of the first jet-powered military-transport aircraft Il-76 and was involved in the design of numerous modifications. The Il-76 became the main aircraft of military transport aviation. Under the guidance of General Designer the new generation of “Il” aircraft, important for the development of national economy and defense potential, was designed, built, flight-tested and put into production. Among them there are the first Soviet wide-body medium-range Il-86 and its military version Il-80 (airborne command center), the modified Il-76MF with long fuselage and new PS90-76 engines; the entirely new wide-body long-range Il-96-300 that serves as a base for the Il-96-400T freighter. During the lean years for our aviation industry the light multi-purpose Il-103 aircraft made its flight; there was created the prototype model of the Il-96MO with American engines and equipment. The latter became the foundation for the first production freighter Il-96T that rolled out of the gates of Voronezh plant in April, 1997. At present the Il-114-100 airliner successfully flies with local air carriers.

It is also important to mention works on the aircraft for governmental transport, directed by G.V. Novozhilov: the Il-18, Il-62, Il-62M and Il-96PU. All these aircraft have IAC certificates and are operated in Russia and abroad.

In his personal list of scientific research there are 130 patented inventions and innovations, studies of wing aerodynamic configuration, airframe reliability with account for damage safety, high adaptability to manufacture and new maintenance principles. In 1984 G.V. Novozhilov was elected active member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He was elected three times as a deputy of the Moscow Soviet, three times – of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union, people’s deputy of the Soviet Union, was a member of the State Defense Committee of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union.
